about

I originally performed Sonata for Solo Bass Trombone during my Master’s recital at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. This three movement unaccompanied work was composed in 1997 for Mr. Goodman's acquaintance, bass trombonist R. Charles Jacks.

From Mr. Goodman:
“R. Charles Jacks (Chuck) was a bass trombonist at Duquesne University where I was a student. I worked with him at the Pittsburgh Symphony and I told him I wanted to start to write music, be a composer. And he said he'd commission a work from me. I had never really written anything before so I was excited to get a commission, but it has to start somewhere I guess. He commissioned this piece and it's my most played, most known piece so far. Fairly ironic.”

Each movement provides a sharp contrast to the others. The first movement, “Thundercracke” gets its name from its frequent use of bombastic dynamics and boisterous effects like rapid slide trills and flutter-tonguing. “Quite”, the second movement of the Sonata, is reminiscent of someone tiptoeing through a room of slumbering giants…until one of the slumbering beasts is disturbed! The final movement, “Derby”, is an homage to a movement of Gordon Jacob's Cameos for solo bass trombone entitled “Derby Winners”, bringing to life the fun and excitement of the traditional English horse races.
